When this specialty e-commerce business changed hands, I stepped in at the operator level to steady it through the transition and re-platform its 20,000-plus SKUs, migrating the store from WooCommerce to BigCommerce and ultimately Shopify, delivered on schedule. Costs came down, profitability went up, and inventory got dramatically simpler — helped by a custom, searchable catalog I built from the Shopify data to handle the bulk-lot inventory details — leaving the new owner with a site that just worked, free to focus on what she does best: customer service, purchasing, and fulfillment.
WooCommerce
- The inherited store
- Desktop only
- Legacy plugins
- Product catalog in disarray
The new owner had to deal with technical debt from years of digital neglect, which is where we started the project. After a thorough technical assessment, we decided a migration made more sense than trying to fix the existing platform.
BigCommerce
- Mobile-optimized
- Large catalog support
- Updated product taxonomy
- Improved user experience
We migrated a massive catalog to a new platform, and also reorganized it. The impact was immediate and positive; customers could shop from any device and the owner no longer had to support a crash-prone and disorganized system.
Shopify
- Smaller catalog
- Weight-based shipping
- Simpler admin interface
The owner made a strategic decision to downsize, selling through a large percentage of inventory while on BigCommerce. After that, we reduced monthly tech spend even more by right-sizing the platform to the new need.
Bulk-lot catalog
- Eleventy + Nunjucks
- Pagefind search
- Built from Shopify data
- Images on Cloudflare R2
We kept all of the product inventory data in order to build a browsable static catalog that would sit alongside the remaining bulk product lots available for purchase. The early version of this web app was built in a week.

“Working with Jonathan was one of the best decisions I made for my business. I`m not a technical person, and he explained everything in a way that made sense to me. Two platform migrations and I never once felt lost. My costs went down, my inventory got easier to manage, and I could focus on my customers instead of my website.”
